Dunn School Achieves 100% Gold LEAF Award for Sustainability Excellence

We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone: the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology has achieved a 100% Gold LEAF award in 2024. Every lab and facility within the Dunn School (34 in total) has been honored with their respective Gold Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) awards. This remarkable achievement was celebrated at a showcase event at Lady Margaret Hall on July 9.

These outstanding accomplishments highlight the department’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The LEAF program, the world’s largest green lab initiative, empowers researchers to integrate sustainable practices into their work. Recognized by the UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN), LEAF emphasizes the importance of sustainability in conducting high-quality research. Labs within the framework assess their practices and strive for Bronze, Silver, or Gold awards, with Gold being the highest level of achievement.

Globally, laboratories are responsible for around 2% of plastic waste and consume 3-10 times more energy per square meter than typical offices. By participating in the LEAF program, labs can significantly reduce their carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and foster an environment that supports sustainable research practices.

The Dunn School has spearheaded various sustainability initiatives, including:

– Waste Warriors: Promoting recycling and waste reduction.
– Cooler at -70°C: Enhancing energy efficiency of ultra-low temperature freezers.
– Glass Serological Pipettes: Minimizing single-use plastic waste by introducing reusable glassware.
– Community Collaborations: Engaging with the wider community on sustainability projects, such as food waste reduction.

This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. We commend the dedicated efforts of each lab and facility and look forward to continuing our quest for excellence in sustainable research practices.
