Ceramic Revolution at Dunn School: Bidding Adieu to Single-Use Plastics
In February 2020, the Green Group of Dunn School at the University of Oxford unveiled a trailblazing green initiative, a testament to our dedication to a sustainable, plastic-free campus. Addressing the environmental setbacks of single-use plastics, we've birthed an ingenious alternative.
Walking through the corridors of the Dunn School, one can witness a rich history, not just through the cutting-edge research and academic excellence, but also through the numerous ceramic mugs that have been left behind by alumni and past members of the institution. These mugs, once forgotten or overlooked, have been revitalized. Hand-washed and then sterilized in a machine, they are conveniently placed in trays next to the microwave ovens, situated close to the drinking water tap. Members of the Dunn School community can simply pick a mug, use it, and once done, leave it in the café area. They're then collected, washed in the dishwasher, and prepared for the next use. Over the years, some of the mugs were generously donated by current members of the Dunn School, often surplus from their offices or homes. Additionally, to support our eco-friendly efforts, several suppliers have contributed brand-new mugs adorned with their logos.
But their purpose extends beyond just daily hydration. These mugs also play a pivotal role in events at the Dunn School. For gatherings such as the "Dunn Drinks" and other institutional events, these mugs are borrowed to serve tea and coffee, eliminating the need for disposable alternatives. Even visitors to the school opt for these sustainable mugs over single-use options at the café.
This initiative reduces the consumption of single-use plastics and fosters a sense of communal belonging and continuity. Sipping from these mugs, members are not only hydrating but also savoring a slice of the Dunn School's legacy. They stand as symbols of a collective effort from the school's members and its suppliers to effect positive change.
The Green Group's switch from disposable cups to ceramic mugs underscores our steadfast eco-commitment. This initiative epitomizes our philosophy: True sustainability often arises from valuing and repurposing the treasures we already possess.
