Global Partnerships for a Greener Future
The Dunn School Green Group is committed to promoting environmental sustainability not only within our local community but also around the world. Through our Global Outreach Initiative, we encourage members to bring sustainable practices to their home countries, sharing knowledge, fostering discussions, and learning from a diverse array of perspectives.
Our members engage in seminars and educational sessions with students, faculty, and staff at universities and colleges abroad. These events serve as platforms to share insights on sustainability, highlight the importance of reducing environmental footprints, and empower others to make meaningful, sustainable changes in their own communities. Many members take advantage of existing trips home, using flights or public transport they would already be taking to visit family, thereby spreading sustainability messages without adding to their carbon footprint.
Through these exchanges, we gather ideas from around the world, exploring new approaches to environmental challenges that can be implemented back at the Dunn School. This initiative strengthens our network of sustainability advocates and fosters a resilient, interconnected community dedicated to continuous improvement through shared global wisdom.
Examples of Outreach:
During a recent holiday visit to Delhi, India, Saroj Saurya, Chair of the Dunn School Green Group, was invited by Prof. Dr. Rachna Kapila to present an environmental sustainability seminar to undergraduate students studying Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry and Resource Management & Design Application at Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi. In her hour-long talk, delivered in Hindi with key English terms, Saroj shared insights on her scientific work and discussed the environmental impact of laboratory practices, such as energy and plastic consumption in research. She highlighted Dunn School’s efforts to minimize carbon footprints by reducing energy use, reusing, and recycling lab plastics, and exploring plastic alternatives. This sparked discussions on India’s impressive plastic recycling rate of 60%, far exceeding the global average of 20%, and local practices of repurposing lab plastics due to the high cost of single-use items.
Saroj also introduced Dunn School’s food and goods rescue initiatives, which resonated deeply in a culture where surplus food is widely redistributed. While India faces challenges with coal-powered electricity, she noted the government’s progress toward solar energy and the increasing use of LPG in vehicles. Her visit concluded with a tour of the zoology lab, where she witnessed students’ enthusiasm for learning despite limited resources, followed by a shared meal with faculty. Leftover food was distributed among students and staff, embodying the principles of community sharing and waste reduction.
