2022 Vice-Chancellor’s LEAF Champion Awards for Environmental Sustainability: A Triumph for the Dunn School Green Group

The Sir William Dunn School of Pathology takes immense pride in the achievements of our grass roots environmental initiative, the Dunn School Green Group. Through their tireless efforts, we have seen unprecedented participation in the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) scheme. Out of the 35 labs within the Dunn School, an impressive 34 registered to the LEAF scheme, including the washing and workshop facilities.

Since 2020, the Green Group, has worked relentlessly to reduce our environmental impact. They have championed numerous activities and conducted research into innovative practices that support sustainability. Key initiatives include the washing and reusing of plastic consumable items, recycling of gloves and facemasks, and the inclusion of sustainability topics during the induction of new staff members.

Our labs' exceptional commitment to environmental sustainability has been recognized with an array of LEAF awards. Ten of our labs achieved Gold status, 14 earned Silver, and 9 were granted Bronze. Given the average carbon reduction figures for LEAF labs, these accolades translate to an estimated annual saving of around 100 tonnes of CO2e.

In recognition of the Green Group's outstanding work, the Chair, Dr. Saroj Saurya, was honored to receive the 2022 Vice-Chancellor’s LEAF Champion Award for Environmental Sustainability on behalf of the group at the VC award ceremony. This acknowledgement underscores the significant strides we've made towards sustainable practices and the vital role that the Green Group plays within our school.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Dunn School Green Group for their unwavering dedication and commitment towards a greener future. We look forward to our continued journey towards sustainability.
