The Dunn School Green Group was established in February 2020 with a simple yet profound aim: to encourage scientists and support staff within the Dunn School to be more conscious of our carbon impact and to develop more sustainable attitudes and habits. Since its inception, the group has made significant strides in promoting environmental sustainability within the Dunn School, and I am proud to be a part of this journey. So, what makes the Dunn School Green Group successful? I believe there are several key factors.
1. Collective Effort: The Green Group is a voluntary collective of student and staff activists from across the Dunn School community. Our strength lies in our diversity and the shared commitment of our members to make a difference. We all bring unique perspectives and ideas to the table, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
2. Practical Initiatives: We focus on implementing practical, achievable initiatives that have a tangible impact on reducing our environmental footprint. From promoting equipment energy savings and recycling lab gloves to lobbying suppliers to improve their sustainability credentials, our actions are designed to make a real difference.
3. Education and Awareness: We understand that change begins with awareness. Through initiatives like the Climate Awareness Week, we aim to educate our community about the importance of sustainable practices and the steps they can take to reduce their carbon impact.
4. Engagement with the Wider Community: Our success is not just confined to the Dunn School. We actively engage with University of Oxford Sustainability team, our suppliers, other departments, and external organizations like Marston Eco Group, Marston Community gardening, Share Oxford and Oxford Friends of the Earth to promote sustainability on a wider scale.
5. Leadership Support: The support we receive from the Dunn School's leadership has been instrumental in our success. Their commitment to sustainability and their willingness to support our initiatives have been invaluable.
6. Recognition and Awards: Our efforts have been recognized with numerous awards, including the High Sheriff's Climate Action Heroes Award, Gold Green Impact award and multiple LEAF accreditations. These accolades serve as a testament to our hard work and dedication, and they motivate us to strive for even greater achievements.
7. Persistence: Last but not least, our success can be attributed to our persistence. We are committed to our mission and are not deterred by challenges. We understand that change takes time and we are prepared to put in the effort required to achieve our goals.
The journey towards sustainability is a long one, and we still have a long way to go. However, I am confident that with the continued efforts of the Green Group and the support of the Dunn School community, we can make a significant difference. Thank you for your continued support and for joining us on this journey towards a more sustainable future.
