Dunn School Green Festival – Great Big Green Week 2025

The Dunn School Green Festival, held from 7–15 June 2025 as part of the national Great Big Green Week, was a vibrant celebration of sustainability, community spirit, and climate action. Organised by the Dunn School Green Group, the festival opened with the raising of the Green Group flag, symbolising the department’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable science. Popular events included a plant and seed swap and a clothes swap, promoting circular use and waste reduction with generous support from B&Q. Food also played a central role, with a bake and cook sale prepared from surplus ingredients provided by Oxford’s community-wide food and goods rescue initiative volunteers , alongside additional cakes from the Dunn School Café. A SESI refill station helped cut down on single-use packaging, while the Bike Doctor clinic, run in collaboration with the university sustainability team, encouraged greener commuting by offering free bike repairs.

The week concluded with a seminar, “One for All: Sustainable Facilities for our Future Research”, delivered by Dr Marcelo J. Salierno (King’s College London) and chaired by Dr Saroj Saurya. The talk explored how researchers can reduce their carbon footprint through energy efficiency, reduced plastic use, and greater student involvement in sustainability initiatives. Proceeds from the week’s activities are being donated to Oxford Mutual Aid, with the Dunn School community aiming to raise at least £200 in support. The festival captured the spirit of Great Big Green Week by combining practical action with community engagement, reinforcing the Dunn School’s role as a leader in sustainable research and climate responsibility.
